In 1984, John Zizioulas was honored to be invited by the ancient and eponymous Gregorian University of Rome to teach Systematic Theology for one semester, which he did during the second semester of the 1983-84 academic year. The course he taught was entitled “Christology in its relation to Spirituality and Ecclesiology” and covered 4 hours a week. It was attended with interest by a large number of students (80-100), most of whom were post-graduate students, and as the exams he conducted at the end of the year proved, these were extremely capable students. Since the future leaders of the Roman Catholic Church are trained in this University from all over the world, the teaching of Orthodox theology in it takes on particular importance.
