Welcome to the official website of the John Zizioulas Foundation. We use the work of the author, theologian, and Metropolitan John D. Zizioulas (1931-2023) to promote his theological synthesis, uncover its significance, study his fundamental theological and philosophical themes, rediscover the patristic tradition behind it, and encourage people to study theology creatively and critically.
The Metropolitan of Pergamon articulated a deeply traditional Orthodox theology of open horizons. The importance he gave to the person, the creation, and the Eschata also fertilized other theological environments that transcend confessional boundaries. Free from any kind of nationalism or anti-Westernism, his thought is certainly translatable but also demanding and inviting to advance our understanding of the deepest and most perplexing questions facing humankind.
He dedicated his life to the ministry of unity, both with his multifaceted work and being active in the ecumenical movement, representing Orthodoxy in numerous and most important multilateral and bilateral inter-Christian dialogues.
