The Orthodox Trinitarian principle that the Father is the sole cause ( aitia ), source, and principle of the Son’s and the Spirit’s personal existence. Unity in the Trinity is personal, not substantial. This principle is at stake in the Filioque controversy: any suggestion of a second cause for the Spirit’s procession undermines it.
