OmegAlpha is an Open Access, peer-reviewed scholarly journal devoted to the thought and work of the late Metropolitan of Pergamon John D. Zizioulas (1931–2023). It is edited by Dr. Nikolaos Asproulis, and every issue is freely available to read at omegalpha.zizioulas.org.
Aims and Scope
The journal publishes scholarly articles on questions specific to Metropolitan John’s theology, and on the broader questions raised by his theological legacy — approached from a theological, philosophical, historical, or any other perspective. Its editorial policy is ecumenical. Alongside original papers, it publishes critical book reviews, review essays, and responses to articles.
Its pages also open onto the archive. Under the heading Theological Heritage, the journal publishes texts by Metropolitan John himself, some of them for the first time: the latest issue opens with his essay on Dostoevsky, and the next, already announced, will carry the first publication of his handwritten notes, “The Logic of Identity.”
The Name
The title reverses the familiar order of the Apocalypse — “I am the Alpha and the Omega” (Rev. 22:13). The reversal echoes a conviction that runs through Metropolitan John’s theology, and which he once put in a single sentence:
It took us a long time in theology to cease treating eschatology as the last chapter of dogmatics. Some of us still treat it in this way, but we are all gradually learning that the Omega is what gives meaning to the Alpha.

He developed the same thought at full length in his last major work, Remembering the Future. The journal’s emblem was drawn by the iconographer Fr. Stamatis Skliris, a member of the Foundation’s International Council.
