  Previously every page pulled its fonts from fonts.googleapis.com and
  fonts.gstatic.com. That sent each visitor's IP address to Google on every
  page load, which German courts have held to breach the GDPR when done
  without consent (LG München I, 3 O 17493/20) — a real exposure for a
  foundation whose audience is largely European. It also put a third-party
  origin on the critical rendering path: two extra DNS+TLS handshakes before
  any text could be styled, and a hard dependency on a host this project does
  not control. Both problems disappear once the files are served from this
  domain.

  WHAT IS HERE, AND WHY EXACTLY THIS SET
  The content was scanned (content/**\/*.md) to establish which scripts this
  site actually contains: Latin, Latin-ext, Greek — including polytonic
  (U+1F00-1FFF), which patristic quotations need — and Cyrillic. Nothing uses
  Vietnamese or Devanagari, so those subsets Google offers are not shipped.

  Each family then carries only the scripts it is the one actually rendering:

    Playfair Display  latin, latin-ext, cyrillic
                      Display/serif face. Google publishes no Greek for it.
    Noto Serif        greek, greek-ext          <- and nothing else
                      Sits behind Playfair in --font-display purely to cover
                      the Greek that Playfair lacks. Shipping its Latin or
                      Cyrillic would be dead weight: Playfair renders those.
    Inter             latin, latin-ext, greek, greek-ext, cyrillic, cyrillic-ext
                      Body/UI face; covers every script on this site alone.
    Oswald            latin, latin-ext, cyrillic
                      Nav face. No Greek in Google's build, so Greek nav text
                      falls through to Inter, which has it.

  Noto Sans is deliberately absent. It sits behind Inter in --font-sans, but
  Inter already covers every script present here, so no Noto Sans file could
  ever be fetched — shipping it would have added ~684 KB that no visitor
  would ever download. It stays named in the stack (tokens.css), where it
  costs nothing and is still honoured if a visitor has it installed locally.

  A BUG THIS FIXED
  Greek headings were rendering in whatever serif the visitor's OS happened
  to supply. --font-display has always read 'Playfair Display', 'Noto Serif',
  serif, but Playfair has no Greek and Noto Serif was never actually loaded —
  it was named in the stack and nowhere in the old Google Fonts request.
  Measured before the change: a Greek <h1> was pixel-identical in width to
  plain `serif`, while the same heading in Latin was not. Greek headings now
  render in Noto Serif everywhere instead of varying per operating system.

  MECHANICS
  woff2 only (universally supported for years; a woff/ttf tier would only add
  bytes). Variable fonts, so one file per subset covers the whole weight
  range the design uses rather than one file per weight. unicode-range on
  every face, which is what keeps this cheap: a browser downloads only the
  subsets the page in front of it actually needs — an English page pulls
  ~194 KB, a Greek one ~146 KB more, out of 720 KB total on disk.
  font-display: swap keeps text visible during load, same as before.

  Licensing: all four families are SIL Open Font License 1.1, which
  explicitly permits redistribution and self-hosting.

  UPDATING: re-download from Google with the same subset choices rather than
  hand-editing this file; the unicode-range values must keep matching the
  files they point at. Bump ASSET_VERSION (tools/lib/config.mjs) after any
  change here, as with every other CSS/JS edit.
